SAFETY FEATURES & CRASH TEST RATINGS: 2008 Honda Accord Sedan

The 2008 Honda Accord does very well in government crash tests and is one of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's "Top Safety Picks" for good performance in both frontal offset and side impact tests. For 2008, the Accord now has front side air bags with a new dual chamber design that deploys in passengers' pelvis area as well as the torso.
Also new are in-floor frame rails and Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure, designed to disperse crash energy away from passengers on collision with vehicles of different sizes and bumper heights.

Other safety features included in new Accord are skid-correcting electronic stability control; antilock brakes; curtain air bags, which cover the side windows to provide protection in a side-impact crash and “active” head restraints that move forward to reduce the chance of whiplash injuries for the front occupants. It also had brake-assist, which ensures that the driver is using all of a vehicle’s braking power in a panic stop.

Crash Test Ratings: 2008 Honda Accord Sedan
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration: The Accord earns five out of five stars for driver and front passenger protection in front impact crashes, five out of five stars for the front seat occupants' protection in side crashes and three out of five stars for backseat occupants protection in side crashes. The Accord also earns a five-star rollover rating.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety: The Accord earns the Insurance Institute's highest score, "Good," for both frontal offset and side impact crash tests.

Safety Features: 2008 Honda Accord Sedan

Car and Driver: "The body structure of the '08 lineup should further enhance Honda's reputation for safety with the adoption of "Advanced Compatibility Engineering" to disperse energy upon impact in a frontal collision."

The Car Connection: "With the debut of the 2008 Accord, Honda turns to the new ACE body structure that is stiffer than ever. That's great for handling -- and for safety, though the new structure also crushes in a manner designed to channel crash pulses away from the passenger compartment."

Motor Week: "With a double-wishbone front suspension, and a new multi-link rear design, an Accord never felt more competent. Just in case, VSA electronic stability and traction control are now standard."

Popular Mechanics: "On the safety front, all Accords get…enough airbags to cushion the fall of the Holy Roman Empire."

USA Today: "Slender windshield pillars give the driver a better, safer vista, even as rivals seem to be making their pillars fatter and more visually intrusive. Honda says it's made the skinny pillars at least as strong as wider ones."
